John McCain and Company are shocked, SHOCKED that their now infamous Britney Spears/Paris Hilton attack ad against Barack Obama has become a topic of speculation for its “racial overtones.”

Pop Quiz (Three Questions):

1). What American political party in the mid-1980s ran ads featuring a close up of a pair of alabaster white hands crumpling up a job application because affirmative action gave all the good jobs to undeserving blacks?

2). What American political party in the late-1980s ran an attack ad that featured a scary black convict who was released on a prison work furlough program and raped a woman?

3). What American political party in the last election cycle ran an ad featuring a seductive scantily-clad young white woman beckoning the African-American candidate to “call” her for a sexual rendezvous?

And John McCain says Barack Obama is “playing the race the card?”

As the nation grapples with its first African-American nominee from a major political party to come so close to winning the presidential prize it is perhaps useful to look at a bit of American history from the early 20th century. In 1910, the “Fight of the Century” took place between the defending heavyweight-boxing champion, John “Jack” Johnson, who was African American, and James Jeffries, who was white. Newspaper reporters and sports writers at the time referred to Jeffries as “the Great White Hope.” One sports writer from the “Chicago Tribune” opined that Johnson’s “innate conceit and vanity will cause him to strive for the theatrical, to pose for the crowd and the pictures, whereas Jeffries will go about his work in a businesslike manner.”

When I read that 98-year-old newspaper clip I couldn’t help but think of some of the words the McCain campaign (with a hefty assist from the corporate media) has tried to associate in the public’s mind with Barack Obama: “presumptuous,” “overconfident,” “cocky,” “out of touch,” “elitist.” Obama is in good company. These are the same kind of charges that white supremacists leveled at Jack Johnson, Paul Robeson, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

McCain’s TV commercial smearing Obama for his “celebrity” with images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton dissolving into images of Obama is the first montage the Republicans have deployed featuring Obama and young white women.

It will not be the last.

There is a pattern here: John McCain willfully misconstrues things Obama says and then pretends to be “astonished” that Obama would say such things. McCain stands by his campaign’s attack ad that falsely accused Obama of snubbing troops in Lundstahl, Germany. He also stands by his campaign’s sleazy Britney/Paris ad claiming that some useful or worthy public information service was provided.

This election should be a referendum on eight miserable years of misrule by the Republicans. But the descendents of white people who used to picnic at lynchings are coming out of the woodwork — with the active encouragement of the McCain campaign. This silent army that is connected not only to the Republican Party’s Southern wing but to white supremacist groups like the Council of Conservative Citizens (C of CC) needs no marching orders from Fox News, the McCain campaign, or the Republican National Committee. They know that if they cannot muster the resolve to stop a black man from becoming the President of the United States then what is the value of white privilege? McCain is carrying the torch to keep “hope” alive that wealthy white men will continue to be the center of the world.

In a year when polls show an easy victory for a generic Democratic candidate, McCain has until now been loath to employ the tack many strategists see as essential and which anonymous e-mailers and commenters with no apparent links to his campaign have been practicing since last summer: hitting Obama not on his record or his platform, but on his values and person.

McCain is outspending Obama in: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, New Mexico, Minnesota, and West Virginia.

Obama is outspending McCain in: Florida, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Indiana, New Hampshire, and North Dakota.

What's interesting here is that McCain is outspending Obama in almost all the "traditional swing states." Most of the states Obama is outspending McCain in are states that most figured wouldn't even be in play this year -- Georgia, North Carolina, Indiana, and North Dakota.

It's also interesting to see that McCain has spent NOTHING in Florida while Obama has spent more there than anywhere else. This certainly explains why almost all the most recent polling out of Florida has Obama ahead of McCain. McCain is going to have to start spending in that state as his decision to let Obama have the airwaves to himself there has resulted in the state becoming a virtual toss up when many thought it wouldn't even be in play this year.

We can also see that, so far, McCain is not defending North Carolina, Indiana, North Dakota, and Georgia. Obama has the airwaves to himself in all of those states. I don't expect McCain to spend in Georgia or North Dakota, but not doing so in North Carolina and Indiana is a major risk. Obama is taking North Carolina and Indiana VERY seriously as he is spending more in both of those states than he is in the more traditional swing states of Missouri and Colorado.

McCain's investment in Wisconsin has clearly not paid off as he is falling further behind in the state despite outspending Obama there. Same in Iowa where McCain is spending more but has been consistenly behind for months. McCain's spending in Michigan really shows how seriously he takes that state, and the fact that Obama is spending so much there also signifies that he is aware that he could lose it. Likewise, McCain's spending in Virginia shows that he is taking Obama's challenge there seriously and feels the state could flip if he doesn't defend it.

We also can see that McCain doesn't really think he can win Minnesota as he is spending virtually nothing there. Considering how big a state Minnesota is, McCain won't be able to pull off an upset there without serious spending. Combine this with the fact that McCain did not include Minnesota in his ad buy for his new "celebrity" ad, and we can conclude that McCain has more or less given up on Minnesota.

Pennsylvania is obviously a huge battleground that is, so far, paying off for Obama. We have not seen McCain make up any real ground in PA despite spending big money there. But the fact that he has invested so much makes me think that he will stick to fighting for PA until the very end.

Also interesting to see how little is being spent in New Mexico and how much Obama is spending in Georgia. If he doesn't see some real movement in Georgia soon, a lot of people are going to start questioning how he can spend so much money in a state that he doesn't appear to have any real chance in. Obama is spending more in Georgia than he is in key states like Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, and Missouri.

That Florida number will be one to watch. Obama is already leading in most Florida polls now. McCain will have to start spending there heavily, or risk falling further behind. Once McCain starts spending in Florida (which is a very expensive state), his spending elsewhere is going to be greatly reduced. It'll be interesting to see where McCain pulls money from when he makes the decision to allocate more to Florida. He is also going to need to defend North Carolina and Indiana, otherwise he could easily lose both those states, and finding money to spend there may come as the expense of other states.

Based on all that, I wouldn't be surprised to see McCain cut spending in Wisconsin and Minnesota completely.

Based on the spending patterns, it's pretty obvious that McCain's strategy to victory is to hold on to Ohio, Missouri, and Florida, and flip Michigan and Pennsylvania.

If he does that, he could lose Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, Indiana, Nevada, and Virginia, all states Bush won in 2004, and still sneak out with a narrow 274-264 win.

Of course, if Obama wins North Carolina or Montana/North Dakota, McCain would still lose under that scenario. So McCain's strategy is pretty risky considering he is currently polling consistently behind Obama in Michigan and Pennsylvania, and Ohio and Florida appear to be toss ups.

But it's probably McCain's best bet considering that he is likely to lose Iowa, New Mexico, and probably Colorado, and has no real chances in any major blue states except Michigan and, to a lesser extent, Pennsylvania.

Obama's strategy is obviously to just hold on to the Kerry states (he is polling ahead in all of them), add Iowa and New Mexico as he is looking likely to win both of those, and then just add one of the following: Colorado, Virginia, Ohio, Florida, Indiana, Georgia, or Missouri. He also can add in smaller states like Nevada, North Dakota, and Montana as backups.

Let's be honest: John McCain does not have much to say about what he would do as President, and when he does talk about what he wants to do, he only confuses himself, his supporters, and the reporters who have the unfortunate task of trying to follow his shifting positions and garbling of the facts.

In the last few weeks, John McCain has told us that Iraq and Pakistan border on each other; that the Anbar Awakening, the uprising against Al-Qaeda in Iraq, began after the surge; that he is open to raises taxes; that he would never raise taxes; that Obama should visit Iraq; that he was a publicity hound for visiting Iraq -- this can go on for awhile, so let's stop now.

Wait, I can't stop myself. He was (and is) a major proponent of the war in Iraq, which he said would be short and paid for by Iraqis. He was against drilling off the coasts, but now he's for it. He was against tax cuts without spending cuts, but now he's for them. He thought the Religious Right was intolerant, but now he's tolerant of the intolerant. He is for reducing the influence of lobbyists, but lobbyists were running every aspect of his campaign.

I know what John McCain stands for -- he stands for John McCain. He stands for politics as usual. He stands for more of the same.

It was not that long ago that John McCain was the darling of the media. It was not that long ago that John McCain was a hero to Independents and even many Democrats, because people believed that McCain was the rare guy who could talk straight. I know you had Democratic friends who loved John McCain. I bet they deny that now.

In order to be President, McCain feels that compromises have to be made, and with the Oval Office so close, John McCain will do whatever he has to do to survive. That means that the John McCain of 2000 has morphed into what he fought against -- the George W. Bush of 2000. The candidate who spread false information, the candidate who attacked, attacked, attacked, the candidate who won through cynicism.

Because he has such a hard time figuring out his own views, the McCain is trying to put the Obama campaign on it's, and Paris Hilton's heels.

If I were John McCain's campaign advisor, I, too, would advise Senator McCain to run commercials that featured Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. I would seek the politics of personal distraction. I would put Obama in commercials with public enemies Dina Lohan and Heidi Montag (oh, wait, she supports McCain and dines with his daughter -- perhaps the video of that lunch is the response ad Obama should offer). Ludacris would be Obama's best friend.

And I get that McCain knows the only voters out there for him are older women and Republicans who have not yet decided whether to hold their noses and vote for him. Obviously, African-Americans aren't voting for McCain. Latinos are headed Obama's way. Young women are not going to opt for the guy who voted against equal pay for equal work. Young men are not going to vote for the guy who yells at them to get off of his lawn.

So, what's left for McCain? Scaring older people and Republicans into thinking that Obama is all style, no substance. McCain's ads are not about racism; they are about hope -- the hope that the American people are so stupid that they care more about Paris Hilton than they do about their jobs, health care, the environment, foreign policy, and their pensions.

The Karl Rove-acolytes running the McCain campaign know one way of winning. Destroy the other guy. It's worked before.

Will it work again? Well, McCain's climbed a bit in the polls in the last couple of days. But Obama's camp is tough. They know that criticism has to be responded to, no matter how inane, (or Insane Ed.), the ad. They know that Obama has to talk about the economy now, all day, all the time.

But McCain's people are smart, too -- they know that, in the summer months when there's not much news, McCain's wacky ads qualify as news, and the CNN's and MSNBC's repeatedly show and talk about McCain and whether he's right about Obama -- not about McCain's shifting positions on the major issues of the day.

They also know that the polls show a generic Democrat whipping a generic Republican, but the Obama-McCain polls are closer. Why is that, since we have just had eight years of Bush? Because the American people view the Bush Presidency as such a freak show that they do not believe any other President, of any party, would be such a disaster for the country. The American people believe Bush is an anomaly. They're willing to give a reasonable Republican a chance.

But McCain has shown, with his ads, that he's more of the same. He's running the Bush campaigns of 2000 and 2004. So it's hard to argue that he'd be much different as President, considering that he's also taken on many of Bush's policy views.

In the end, this is what will put Obama over the top -- people are tired of angry politics. At least, I think they are, but I say that because I'm tired of it. And it's only the beginning of August -- we have more than three months to go. McCain's anger, always boiling up inside of him, is bound to make the American people will grow tire of him soon. His lack of knowledge means that he'll keep making mistakes.

Yet if I were McCain's camp, I'd be running the same type of attack commercials and the same type of attacking campaign. When you have nothing good to say about yourself, slam the other guy.

A side note: I keep reading that if Obama selects Joe Biden for VP, it would be because he seeks to run with an elder statesman with foreign policy credentials. But the reason to pick Senator Biden is not just because of his leadership on foreign policy -- it is also because of his leadership on women's issues, such as the ahead of it's time Violence Against Women Act that has saved countless families; crime, for which Senator Biden has written the legislation that put 100,000 more cops on the street in the '90's and saw crime dramatically reduced; his leadership on the Judiciary Committee; and his knowledge of how to get things done in Washington.

When people say that Senator Biden has been in D.C. for too long, and that he'd muddle the change message, I say to them that the only way to make change is to get your legislation through Congress. Senator Biden has proven time and again to be ahead of his time on domestic issues, and he has shown he knows how to get things done in Washington. Those are fine reasons to select Senator Biden for VP.

All we've seen and heard from him for the last month is a string of personal attacks, culminating in yesterday's ad smearing Obama as "the biggest celebrity in the world." He's just another famous, pretty face, in other words, and not ready for the presidency.

True? No. Childish? Yes. But that's not all. This ad is also deliberately and deceptively racist.

Of all the famous celebrities they could have compared Obama to, why not Tom Cruise? Or Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Donald Trump, or Oprah Winfrey? Why Britney Spears and Paris Hilton? Why two white blond bimbos?

Only one reason. It's a somewhat tamer version of the white bimbo ad used so successfully against Harold Ford in Tennessee. In juxtaposing Barack Obama with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, the McCain campaign is simply trying to plant the old racist seed of black man hitting on young white woman. Not directly, but subliminally and disgracefully.

One thing for sure. This isn't the John McCain we first saw in 2000, running a campaign on the issues. And this isn't the positive McCain campaign he himself promised us for 2008. This is a campaign that, from the beginning, is nothing but negative, personal, dirty and, yes, racist.

After months of contending that their campaigns would eschew personal attacks as part of a new kind of politics, the presumptive presidential nominees of the major parties turned nasty over what Obama meant when he said McCain and other Republicans would try to scare voters by pointing out that the Democratic candidate "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

McCain took on the role of aggrieved victim, his campaign waiting almost a day after Obama's remarks to charge that he had injected race into the presidential campaign. "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. Its divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said.

"Nobody thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me," Obama said. "You know, 'He's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name,' you know, 'He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.'"

But by flatly accusing Obama of having "played the race card," McCain ensures that the issue, already looming over the historic campaign, will now take a front-and-center position in a contest that is increasingly being fought more over character than issues.

After countless failed attempts to define Barack Obama in some kind -- any kind -- of negative light, the McCain campaign has come up with a new one. After Obama's triumphant "grand tour" of the middle and his obvious popularity in Europe, McCain's handlers have decided that Obama is acting inappropriately presidential. We wouldn't what a president candidate to act presidential, would we?

So the McCain campaign has not very subtly decided to push this meme by calling Obama presumptuous. McCain's campaign is, of course, being aided and abetted by the always cooperative (so called liberal) media. This time the "liberal" Washing Post columnist Dana Milbank is leading the charge. Here's the first paragraph of his July 30 column:

Barack Obama has long been his party's presumptive nominee. Now he's becoming its presumptuous nominee.

That's a good one, Dana. Really clever.

And I'm not the only one who thinks so.

The Obama is presumptious theme is so good that McCain Campaign Manager Rick Davis sent out an e-mail to all "interested parties" with the subject line Barack Obama's Celebrity. It quotes Milbank's "presumptuous" statement and pumps it up a notch by referring to "Barack Obama's presumptuous arrogance".

I predict we'll be hearing the word presumptuous a lot in the next few days -- and much longer if the McCain campaign, with the help of its media enablers, can get it to stick. In fact, it's pretty much a perfect Republican campaign theme because it not only accuses Barack Obama of being something presumably bad that no one can prove or, more importantly, disprove; it blows the kind of racist dog whistle that Republican love to use against African American Democrats.

Dog whistle politics is a key component of the infamous Republican Southern Strategy that has been responsible for the election of all Republican presidents since Nixon. So it's inevitable that the McCain campaign has rolled it out again against the biggest target ever, Barack Obama. The temptation is just irresistible.

In this case the dog whistle is that Obama is being presumptuous. To most Americans presumptuous means, well, presumptuous. But if you check your thesaurus you'll find that a synonym for presumptuous is uppity. You know, uppity as in uppity n*****. This connection will not be lost on the racists among us. They will chuckle to themselves about the clever way the McCain campaign and their media enablers are calling Obama uppity without actually using the word.

And of course to them it's so obvious that Obama is being uppity. After all, what could be more uppity than a African American candidate acting presidential even before he's elected president? Maybe an African American actually being president?

John McCain's Racist Remark Very Troubling

On his campaign bus recently, Sen. John McCain told reporters, "I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live." Although McCain said he was referring only to his prison guards, there are many reasons why his use of the word "gook" is offensive and alarming.

It is offensive because by using a racial epithet that has historically been used to demean all Asians to describe his captors, McCain failed to make a distinction between his torturers and an entire racial group.

It is alarming because a major candidate for president publicly used a racial epithet, refused to apologize for doing so and remains a legitimate contender.

Contrary to McCain's attempt to narrowly define "gook" to mean only his "sadistic" captors, this term has historically been used to describe all Asians. McCain said that "gook" was the most "polite" term he could find to describe his captors, but because it is simply a pejorative term for Asians, he insulted his captors simply by calling them "Asians" -- a clearly disturbing message.

To the Asian American community, the term is akin to the racist word "nigger." A friend of mine, a white male Vietnam veteran, pointed out that veterans, especially Vietnam veterans, know how spiteful the term "gook" is. It has everything to do with labeling someone as "other," the enemy and yellow. McCain sent the message that all Asians are foreigners and remain forever the "other" and the enemy.

The perception of Asians as "foreigners" or "the other" isn't new. This sentiment is what led to passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Japanese American internment during World War II. The internment of Japanese Americans is now recognized as one of the worst civil rights violations in our country's history and a powerful lesson in what can happen when race alone is used as a test for loyalty or who is defined as an American.

We've made tremendous progress as a nation in overcoming racism. That is why it is so disturbing that a major candidate for the U.S. president can perpetuate the stereotype of Asians as permanent foreigners, hurtling us backward to a time and a place where such racial epithets were an acceptable part of mainstream discourse.

What makes this incident even more disturbing is how neither the media nor the other presidential candidates have highlighted that his use of a racist term is unacceptable.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing minority populations in the United States. And the media's choice to ignore or excuse McCain's behavior is a painful reminder that Asians remain outsiders on the back steps of national American politics.

McCain's main campaign message is inclusion. What his actions have told me, however, is that his inclusion does not include people who look like me.

I love this country just as much as McCain does, and I am committed to serving my community and my country. That is the reason I have entered a career in public service and why I am committed to making America a great country where equal opportunity and justice for everyone is a reality and not just a vision.

John McCain, a member of the House of Representatives in the mid-1980s, often held court at a table near the bar at Bullfeathers, a popular Capitol Hill watering hole, telling jokes and matching hangers-on drink by drink.

As a Capitol Hill chief of staff, I often drank at Bullfeathers and was invited to join the throng at McCain's table one evening. A few minutes listening to the racism, bigotry and homophobia of the Arizona Congressman told me all I needed to know.

McCain loved to tell jokes about lesbians, blacks, Hispanics and the Vietnamese community that occupied a large section of Arlington County, Virginia, just south of the District of Columbia.

Of course, McCain didn't use polite language in the jokes: He used names like "fags" or "queers" or "dykes" or "niggers" or "spics" or "wetbacks" or "gooks."

A typical McCain joke:

Two dykes are talking at a bar and one leaves. As she walks toward the door, the other watches her leave and says out loud: "God, I've love to eat her out."

Two men are standing nearby and one turns to the other and says: "I'd like to do the same. Guess that makes me a dyke."

Or another:

Question: Why does Mexican beer have two "X's" on the label?

Answer: Because wetbacks always need a co-signer.

When he ran for the Senate, I attended a gathering of GOP operatives at the National Republican Senatorial Committee where McCain outlined his campaign strategy:

I play to win. I do whatever it takes to win. If I have to fuck my opponent to win I'll do it. If I have to destroy my opponent I won't give it a second thought.

This is the man the Republican Party thinks should be the next President of the United States. What else should we expect from a party that promotes racism, homophobia and discrimination against anyone with a different skin color, sexual orientation or ethnic origin?

So we shouldn't be surprised that McCain's campaign strategy seeks to raise racial fear about Barack Obama, the first African-American with a serious shot at the Presidency of the United States.

John McCain is a racist: Always has been, always will be. Those who served with him in the Navy say he treated black sailors with disrespect and scorn. His collection of off-color jokes is riddled with racist words and sentiments. Advisors have toned down the raunchy rhetoric of his early years in Congress but close aides say his attitudes have not changed.

McCain opposed making the birthday of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King a national holiday. During his 2000 campaign for President, he told reporters on his "Straight Talk Express: "I hated the gooks (North Vietnamese). I will hate them as long as I live."

Katie Hong of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, who reported the remark, wrote:

It is alarming because a major candidate for president publicly used a racial epithet, refused to apologize for doing so and remains a legitimate contender.

For his 2000 campaign for President, McCain hired Richard Quinn, founder and editor in chief of Southern Heritage Magazine, to serve as his spokesman in South Carolina.

Quinn's articles have called Nelson Mandela a "terrorist" and King a man "whose role in history was to lead his people into a perpetual dependence on the welfare state, a terrible bondage of body and soul." In another piece, Quinn said of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, "What better way to reject politics as usual than to elect a maverick like David Duke?" though he did condemn Duke's bigotry.

Irwin A. Tank, author of Gook: John McCain's Racism, notes a long and sordid history of racism from the presumptive GOP nominee, including:

McCain's use of the anti-Asian slur "gook" publicly for 27 years before dropping the use for his current Presidential run;

McCain's endorsement of George Wallace Jr., a frequent speaker at white supremacist events;

His vote against establishing a holiday for Martin Luther King's birthday and then another vote to rescind the holiday.

In answering a question about divorced fathers and child support, McCain called the children "tar babies."

The list goes on and on. What else do you expect from a racist?

Overturning Roe v. Wade

John McCain believes “Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench”.

Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat.

However, the reversal of Roe v. Wade represents only one step in the long path toward ending abortion. Once the question is returned to the states, the fight for life will be one of courage and compassion - the courage of a pregnant mother to bring her child into the world and the compassion of civil society to meet her needs and those of her newborn baby.

The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need. This work must continue and government must find new ways to empower and strengthen these armies of compassion. These important groups can help build the consensus necessary to end abortion at the state level. As John McCain has publicly noted, "At its core, abortion is a human tragedy. To effect meaningful change, we must engage the debate at a human level."

The wife U.S. Republican John McCain callously left behind

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fiber by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs. McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator’s presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain’s three eldest children.

And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain’s first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.

Why McCain didn't reup with first wife

[W]hen McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering....

McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later....

'My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn’t the reason for my divorce.

‘My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.’

Some of McCain’s acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centered womanizer who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons....

When McCain – his hair turned prematurely white and his body reduced to little more than a skeleton – was released in March 1973, he told reporters he was overjoyed to see Carol again.

But friends say privately he was ‘appalled’ by the change in her appearance. At first, though, he was kind, assuring her: ‘I don’t look so good myself. It’s fine.’...

In 1979 – while still married to Carol – he met Cindy at a cocktail party in Hawaii. Over the next six months he pursued her, flying around the country to see her. Then he began to push to end his marriage.

Carol and her children were devastated. ‘It was a complete surprise,’ says Nancy Reynolds, a former Reagan aide....

Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a leading campaigner for veterans’ rights, said: ‘I have been following John McCain’s career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally. There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is – deceit.

‘When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him knew it.

‘Eventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought was better.

‘This is a guy who makes such a big deal about his character. He has no character. He is a fake. If there was any character in that first marriage, it all belonged to Carol.’...

But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics.

‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.

‘After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.’

In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

JOHN McCain AND THE TELECOM LOBBYIST....OK, let's dive into the John McCain story. According to a heavily padded piece in the New York Times today, several of Mr. Straight Talk's aides became concerned during the 2000 campaign that he was spending a wee bit too much time with an attractive, 32-year-old telecom lobbyist named Vicki Iseman:

In 1999 she began showing up so frequently in his offices and at campaign events that staff members took notice. One recalled asking, "Why is she always around?"

....A former campaign adviser described being instructed to keep Ms. Iseman away from the senator at public events, while a Senate aide recalled plans to limit Ms. Iseman's access to his offices.

In interviews, the two former associates said they joined in a series of confrontations with Mr. McCain, warning him that he was risking his campaign and career. Both said Mr. McCain acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance from Ms. Iseman. The two associates, who said they had become disillusioned with the senator, spoke independently of each other and provided details that were corroborated by others.

Separately, a top McCain aide met with Ms. Iseman at Union Station in Washington to ask her to stay away from the senator. John Weaver, a former top strategist and now an informal campaign adviser, said in an e-mail message that he arranged the meeting after "a discussion among the campaign leadership" about her.

Josh Marshall thinks there's more here than meets the eye:

This is an odd story for a couple reasons. We know that the McCain Camp went to the mattresses to get this story spiked back in December. And some heavy legal muscle was apparently brought to bear. When a story has to go through that much lawyering it often comes out pretty stilted and with some obvious lacunae. And this one definitely qualifies. Reading the Times piece it struck me as a bit of a jumble. The reference to a possible affair is there in the lead. But then most of the piece is a rehash of a lot of older material about McCain's record before getting back to the relationship with Iseman.

In terms of a relationship between the two, the Times piece seems quite hedged. According to two staffers, staffers became concerned there was a romantic relationship. They took steps to protect McCain from himself. According to the Times sources, after being confronted by staffers, McCain "acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance from Ms. Iseman."

Equally telling, though, is the McCain camp's response and their clear unwillingness to address or deny any the key charges of the piece. (Read the statement closely. It's all bluster.) When it comes to sex stories even falsely accused politicians have some reluctance to get into nitty gritty denials. But McCain -- or rather McCain's communications office since it's in their name not his -- doesn't even address it.

WOMEN’S ISSUES

McCain has voted consistently against women's health, and he supports overturning the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Roe v. Wade. Following is a summary of his positions on women's issues.

McCain Opposed Equal Pay Bill for Women, Said They ‘Need Education and Training’ Instead. McCain skipped a vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that would ensure women have the opportunity to recover back pay for discrimination once they discover it. If he had been there to vote, he said he would have voted against it and that women “need education and training” rather than an equal pay bill. The bill addressed a recent Supreme Court decision that said Steelworker Lilly Ledbetter could not recover back pay for 19 years of discrimination at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. because she had not discovered the unequal pay until she retired. The bill would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to allow employees to file charges of pay discrimination within 180 days of the last received paycheck affected by the discrimination. McCain Voted to Gut the Family and Medical Leave Act. In 1993, before finally voting for the Family and Medical Leave Act, McCain voted to jeopardize leave for millions of workers by gutting the bill. He voted to suspend the Family and Medical Leave Act unless the federal government certified that compliance would not increase business expenses or provide financial assistance to businesses to cover any related costs. McCain opposed spending $100 million to prevent unintended and teen pregnancies. In 2005, McCain voted NO to allocate $100 million to expand access to preventive health care services that reduce the numbers of unintended and teen pregnancies and reduce the number of abortions.

McCain opposed legislation requiring that abstinence-only programs be medically accurate and scientifically based.

McCain voted NO on legislation that would help reduce the number of teen pregnancies by providing funding for programs to teach comprehensive, medically accurate sexuality education and other programs to prevent unintended teen pregnancies.

McCain opposed Title X, the nation's family planning program.

In 1990, McCain voted NO on legislation to extend the Title X federal family planning program, which provides low-income and uninsured women and families with health care services ranging from breast and cervical cancer screening to birth control.

McCain opposed requiring insurance coverage of prescription birth control.

In 2003, McCain voted NO on legislation to improve the availability of contraceptives for women and to require insurance coverage of prescription birth control.

McCain opposes comprehensive sex education.

In an interview aboard the "Straight Talk Express," McCain struggled to answer questions about comprehensive sex education and HIV prevention. He also stated that he supported "the president's policy" on sex education.

McCain unsure where he stands on government funding for contraception.
"Whether I support government funding for them or not, I don't know," McCain said about contraceptives.

McCain opposed repealing the "global gag rule."

In 2005, McCain voted NO on legislation to overturn the "global gag rule," which bars foreign nongovernmental organizations from receiving U.S. family planning assistance if the organization (using its own, non-U.S. funds) provides abortion services or information or advocates for pro-choice laws and policies in its own country.

McCain supports overturning Roe v. Wade.

In February 2007, the AP quoted McCain stating, "I do not support Roe v. Wade. It should be overturned." In May 2007, he reiterated his desire to overturn Roe v. Wade during an appearance on Meet the Press stating, ”My position has been consistently in my voting record, pro-life, and I continue to maintain that position and voting record."

BONUS TRACK: McCain has recently admitted he doesn't even know how to use a computer. McCain has admitted he knows little about the economy.

McCain wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. McCain thinks our present health care system is adequate. McCain voted against veterans in 2004, 2005,2006, and 2007.

He missed a vote on a new GI Bill in the Senate for a new GI Bill to provide better education benefits for returning veterans, many of whom are WOMEN... McCain needs women, but his policies (George Bush clone) make him a very unattractive candidate...

Condi Rice, (a Black WOMAN) was offered the VP slot on McCain's GOP Dream Ticket - but refused the honor(?) of becoming the first African American (ever) & First Female to possibly become VP of the USA... Ann Coulter, called "Mrs. Right" by Time Magazine, famously stated she would campaign actively for Hillary Clinton if McCain won the GOP nomination...

The GOP? What about the Republican Party? John and Cindy McCain didn't vote for Bush.

"John McCain looked like a deer caught in the headlights when asked about an issue of vital importance to millions of women, that has been a topic of national and Congressional conversation and that he has voted on in the U.S. Senate. John McCain should give women of America a little of his infamous 'Straight Talk' instead of pleading memory loss due to the thousands of votes he has cast and dodging a straightforward question about his position.

Back in 1999, McCain was walking a tightrope by calling himself pro-life on a personal level while at the same time assuring pro-choice voters for pragmatic reasons that “in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade.” Yet, today, McCain says bluntly right on his website that “John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned.”

· McCain was against the repeal of Roe v. Wade before he was for it.

· McCain was against torture before he was for it. Really for it.

· McCain was against crazy right-wing preachers like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson before he was for them.

· McCain was against Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy before he was for them.

· McCain was against shady Bush “Pioneer” Texas billionaire swift-boat financiers before he was for them.

· McCain was for the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law before he was against it and began breaking it.

· McCain was against Grover Norquist, whom he called “corrupt, a shill for dictators“ before he was for him.

· McCain was against BJU because of its “hateful,” “racist and cruel” policies before he was for it.

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) "drew sharp contrast" with Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) on abortion rights, equal pay for women, and family and medical leave during campaign events in New York and Virginia, the Los Angeles Times reports. Obama said, "I'll never back down in defending a woman's right to choose" (Roug/Reston, Los Angeles Times, 7/11).

McCain "has made it abundantly clear that he ... hopes to see" Roe v. Wade overturned and that he would appoint Supreme Court justices like Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, Obama said. He added, "I stand by my votes against confirming Justices Roberts and Alito." Obama said voters will decide when selecting the next president "whether we'll have judges who demonstrate sound judgment and empathy, who understand how law operates in our daily lives, who are committed to upholding the values at the core of our Constitution -- or judges who put ideology before justice, with our fundamental rights as the first casualty" (Sidoti, AP/Google.com, 7/10).

Obama also said that McCain does not support equal pay for women and said that economic policies that affect women affect everyone. Obama said, "When a job doesn't offer family leave, that also hurts families who may want to care for a newborn baby or ailing parent. When there's no affordable childcare or after school programs, that hurts children. ... When women make only 77 cents for every dollar that a man makes, that doesn't just hurt women. It hurts families" (Los Angeles Times, 7/11). Obama said he would expand family and medical leave programs and require employers to offer seven days of paid sick leave (Dominello, Medical General/Richmond-Times Dispatch, 7/11).

McCain called Obama's proposal to expand family and medical leave a "big-government solution" and said sick days should be negotiated between management and labor. McCain said he is committed to doing whatever he can "to encourage the participation of women in all walks of life and make sure that any barriers to their advancement are eliminated" (Los Angeles Times, 7/11).

We Don’t!

The bellicose saber rattling that surrounds Iran is far more serious than political name calling. With this administration, with Dick Cheney’s vision of what the world should be and the self-ordained right of decision making as to how many lives, American and others, he can consign to graves in the achievement of his goals, his vision; the issue is frightening.

That some American’s can accept with resignation that at strike at Iran is inevitable and then go about their daily lives as though such an action will have no consequences for them “personally” is a demonstration of just how thick and suffocating the layers of administration paint of indifference and impotence have become.

Attacking Iran, under the blood stained covering blanket of , now accepted terminology, “A Preemptive Surgical Strike”, be it by the United States or Israel, (it will make no difference in the eyes of Iran or the world as the accepted concession of fact is that the deed will not be done except as mutual agreement exists), based upon fuzzy propagandized intelligence, war mongering assumptions, Neocon bravado bolstered by the conviction that the American electorate is so anesthetized that they will do nothing but complain a bit until the full weight of such an action hit home like a sledge hammer and then it will be too late.

Such actions are premises on the frailty of human calculations and human assumptions which we have found to be flawed time and time again in the Middle East, simply because we do not have a genuine understanding of the cultural fabric of those people.

We act upon a logic framework of a “Western Power”, western values and Cheney acts with a totally sociopathic compass, a perfect combination for disaster.

The facts are very simple. Iran will not be struck without striking back. They will not simply absorb the attack and complain to the United Nations. If they strike Israel the conflict will escalate in retaliation. We are vulnerable on the water and be struck at great cost. The very suggestion of Iran closing the “Oil Strait” will escalate the acts of war. A strike at Iran could well ignite a Mid East firestorm that escalates into a full scale World War III with very real nuclear consequences, necessitating the reinstatement of an American Draft in the name of a Patriotic War of Defense and survival.

There are those to whom that is an acceptable risk, an acceptable outcome. They will not be fighting. They will be planning the new World Order, contemplating the fortunes to be made in the reconstruction following the conflagration. The Military Industrial complex will flourish; employment will burgeon; fear will drive Americans support and effort and countless number of innocent puppet lives will be squandered.

Will America; Will the World then awakened or will this be simply recorded as yet another very dark page in the history of man’s inhumanity to his fellow beings?

No this is not funny, and John McCain is not funny!

John McCain's "humor" shows disturbing patterns, questioning his presidential ability

Let’s face it; he’s a mean spirited, arrogant, egomaniacal, foul tempered, foul mouthed, War Mongering, Chauvinist Pig, Old Man with Old Ideas and attitudes in need of “Anger Management” Intervention!

There is presidential humor. Mark Russell certainly did a lot of that. And the entertainment from the White House Correspondents Dinner has been great (Stephen Colbert) and horrible (Rich Little).

Then there's presidential candidates (& presidents) and humor. And that, uh, doesn't go well.

John McCain has proven to be a particularly good example as to why presidential candidates shouldn't make jokes.

"Maybe that's a way of killing them." -- McCain said about Iranians, responding to a question about a survey that shows increased exports to Iran, particularly cigarettes.

"That old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran. Bomb, bomb, bomb." - McCain to the tune of the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann."

And not while on the presidential campaign trail, there is the horrendous Chelsea Clinton joke that doesn't need repeating.

John McCain probably thinks he's funny, but he is one of the few. He might even think his "c-nt" reference about his wife's makeup was "funny" as well. (Like I just wrote Danielle in PA who wants to make a video; I suggested ending a women’s issue video with “ If my husband ever said that to me, he'd be out the door and in the poor house after my lawyers got done with him...not running for President!"

McCain may have been learning from George W. Bush, known for his "Jokes in 2004 about not finding WMDs in Iraq, despite the thousands of lost lives after going to war over the "apparent" WMDs.

And let's not forget the Ronald Reagan "classic" on August 11, 1984 when he spoke off the air before his weekly radio address:

My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.

This doesn't mean politicians can't compete in the comedy realm. You can go back to Richard Nixon's "Sock it to Me" appearance on Laugh-In. Or the recent segments with the candidates on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and the "Colbert Report."

And we certainly shouldn't judge a candidate based on a sense of humor, or lack of one. But what we have seen about McCain based on his "humor" is quite disturbing. The president of the United States, despite the current occupant, is a sensitive position where judgment and consideration are vital. And John McCain, regardless of one's politics or philosophy, clearly, wantonly does not have the sensitivity or consideration required to be commander-in-chief.

He’s not funny!

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) once said economics was not his strong suit -- and yesterday he proved it once again: McCain Gets a Third-Rail Shock 'ABSOLUTE DISGRACE' OF SOCIAL SECURITY.

The DNC held a conference call Wednesday with a panel of Social Security experts to discuss McCain's comments and views on Social Security

Also on Monday, McCain told a Vietnam veteran who questioned his voting record on veterans' issues that he has "a perfect voting record from organizations like Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, and all the other veterans' service organizations."

He later added, "I've been endorsed in every election by all of the veterans' organizations that do that. I've been supported by them and received the highest awards from all of those organizations, so I guess they don't know something you know."

McCain's assertions were immediately disproved. The Disabled Veterans of American gave McCain a 20 out of 100 for the period from Jan 2006-Jan 2007. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association gave him a "D." The Vietnam Veterans of America show that since 2001 McCain has voted with them 9 times, against them 15 times, and has missed 8 votes on legislation they consider important.

The AFL-CIO is launching a Veterans Council and debuted TV commercials Thursday in six key battleground states (Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin) that highlight the difference between McCain's service and less-than-stellar voting record on veterans' issues.

A Vietnam Navy veteran says in one commercial, "Every vet respects John McCain's war record ... It's his record in the Senate that I have a problem with."

After appearing out of touch on Social Security and veterans' issues, McCain's top economic adviser former Sen. Phil Gramm told the Washington Times the United States is "a nation of whiners" complaining about economic troubles in what is only a "mental recession."

The comments spurred a significant backlash and prompted the McCain campaign to say "Phil Gramm's comments are not representative of John McCain's views." Though it would seem McCain, who has admitted his understanding of economics is not a strength of his, would have economic advisers such as Gramm for the very purpose of articulating his views.

McCain continued to bumble along on the Straight Talk Express Wednesday. When asked by a reporter about insurance companies that cover erectile dysfunction treatments but not birth control, McCain said, "I certainly do not want to discuss that issue."

He also admitted to not knowing whether he ever voted to require insurance companies to cover contraceptives and said he would look into it.

Reporters also questioned him about the dramatic day he missed in the Senate Wednesday, specifically the failed Republican filibuster (a result of Sen. Ted Kennedy's return) of a Medicare bill to prevent a drop-off in physician reimbursement rates. McCain said he would have voted with many Republicans in opposing cloture.

Mark Halperin of Time wrote in his Wednesday report from the Straight Talk Express: "McCain initially said he did not regret missing the Medicare vote, because the bill would have been vetoed by the president. But he then said he regrets missing any vote."

McCain was the only Senator absent from Wednesday's Medicare vote. He did not participate in a Senate vote Thursday, but also had no scheduled campaign appearance until July 15.

This certainly sounds like enough campaign turmoil for one week, but hey, it's only Thursday. Stay tuned to see who the presumptive Republican Party nominee can offend or confuse tomorrow.

The Real John McCain Exposed: Or What Is Wrong With John McCain?

There is more to John McCain that people need to understand other than he is an inconsistent conservative, war hawk and an old man with old ideas from a time past.

While visions of “War Heroism: swim in his mind along with “victory at any cost” in the manner of Generals who squandered life like water in the massiveness of World Wars; John McCain not only holds positions on social, economic and political issues that are clearly out of touch with reality, he has them all wrapped in a package of a foul “legendary” temper that surpasses the irrationality of Nixon.

And when it comes to women, one has to question the very core of McCain’s being as he seems to hold women in utter contempt as window dressing sex “trophy Wife” objects.

The abandonment of his first wife is not only tragic; it is a horrible commentary on the personality and real values of The Real John McCain.

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam’s infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. ‘I have no bitterness,’ she says.

“My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn’t the reason for my divorce.”

“My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.”

McCain was then earning little more than $25,000 a year as a naval officer, while his new father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was a multi-millionaire who had impeccable political connections.

He first met Carol in the Fifties while he was at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He was a privileged, but rebellious scion of one of America’s most distinguished military dynasties – his father and grandfather were both admirals.

But setting out to have a good time, the young McCain hung out with a group of young officers who called themselves the “Bad Bunch”.

His primary interest was women and his conquests ranged from a knife-wielding floozy nicknamed ‘Marie, the Flame of Florida’ to a tobacco heiress.

Carol fell into his fast-living world by accident. She escaped a poor upbringing in Philadelphia to become a successful model, married an Annapolis classmate of McCain’s and had two children – Douglas and Andrew – before renewing what one acquaintance calls ‘”an old flirtation” with McCain.

It seems clear she was bowled over by McCain’s attention at a time when he was becoming bored with his playboy lifestyle.

“He was 28 and ready to settle down and he loved Carol’s children,” recalled another Annapolis graduate, Robert Timberg, who wrote The Nightingale’s Song, a bestselling biography of McCain and four other graduates of the academy.

The couple married and McCain adopted Carol’s sons. Their daughter, Sidney, was born a year later, but domesticity was clearly beginning to bore McCain – the couple were regarded as ‘fixtures on the party circuit’ before McCain requested combat duty in Vietnam at the end of 1966.

He was assigned as a bomber pilot on an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin.

What follows is the stuff of the McCain legend. He was shot down over Hanoi in October 1967 on his 23rd mission over North Vietnam and was badly beaten by an angry mob when he was pulled, half-drowned from a lake.

War hero: McCain with Carol as he arrives back in the US in 1973 after his five years as a POW in North Vietnam. Over the next five-and-a-half years in the notorious Hoa Loa Prison he was regularly tortured and mistreated.

It was in 1969 that Carol went to spend the Christmas holiday – her third without McCain – at her parents’ home. After dinner, she left to drop off some presents at a friend’s house.

It wasn’t until some hours later that she was discovered, alone and in terrible pain, next to the wreckage of her car. She had been hurled through the windscreen.

After her first series of life-saving operations, Carol was told she may never walk again, but when doctors said they would try to get word to McCain about her injuries, she refused, insisting: “He’s got enough problems, I don’t want to tell him.”

H. Ross Perot, a billionaire Texas businessman, future presidential candidate and advocate of prisoners of war, paid for her medical care.

When McCain – his hair turned prematurely white and his body reduced to little more than a skeleton – was released in March 1973, he told reporters he was overjoyed to see Carol again.

But friends say privately he was ‘appalled’ by the change in her appearance. At first, though, he was kind, assuring her: “I don’t look so good myself. It’s fine.”

He bought her a bungalow near the sea in Florida and another former POW helped him to build a railing so she could pull herself over the dunes to the water.

“I thought, of course, we would live happily ever after,” says Carol. But as a war hero, McCain was moving in ever-more elevated circles.

Through Ross Perot, he met Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California. A sympathetic Nancy Reagan took Carol under her wing.

But already the McCains’ marriage had begun to fray. “John started carousing and running around with women,” said Robert Timberg.

McCain has acknowledged that he had girlfriends during this time, without going into details. Some friends blame his dissatisfaction with Carol, but others give some credence to her theory of a mid-life crisis.

He was also fiercely ambitious, but it was clear he would never become an admiral like his illustrious father and grandfather and his thoughts were turning to politics.

Carol and her children were devastated. ‘It was a complete surprise,’ says Nancy Reynolds, a former Reagan aide.

‘They never displayed any difficulties between themselves. I know the Reagans were quite shocked because they loved and respected both Carol and John.’

Another friend added: ‘Carol didn’t fight him. She felt her infirmity made her an impediment to him. She justified his actions because of all he had gone through. She used to say, “He just wants to make up for lost time.”

Indeed, to many in their circle the saddest part of the break-up was Carol’s decision to resign herself to losing a man she says she still adores.

Friends confirm she has remained friends with McCain and backed him in all his campaigns. “He was very generous to her in the divorce but of course he could afford to be, since he was marrying Cindy,” one observed.

McCain transferred the Florida beach house to Carol and gave her the right to live in their jointly-owned townhouse in the Washington suburb of Alexandria. He also agreed to pay her alimony and child support.

A former neighbor says she subsequently sold up in Florida and Washington and moved in 2003 to Virginia Beach. He said: “My impression was that she found the new place easier to manage as she still has some difficulties walking.”

Meanwhile McCain moved to Arizona with his new bride immediately after their 1980 marriage. There, his new father-in-law gave him a job and introduced him to local businessmen and political power brokers who would smooth his passage to Washington via the House of Representatives and Senate.

And yet despite his popularity as a politician, there are those who won’t forget his treatment of his first wife.

There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is – deceit.

“When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him knew it.”

“Eventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought was better.

This is a guy who makes such a big deal about his character.

He has no character.

He is a fake.

If there was any character in that first marriage, it all belonged to Carol.”

One old friend of the McCains said: “Carol always insists she is not bitter, but I think that’s a defense mechanism. She also feels deeply in his debt because in return for her agreement to a divorce, he promised to pay for her medical care for the rest of her life.”

Carol remained resolutely loyal as McCain’s political star rose. She says she agreed to talk to The Mail on Sunday only because she wanted to publicize her support for the man who abandoned her.

Indeed, the old Mercedes that she uses to run errands displays both a disabled badge and a sticker encouraging people to vote for her ex-husband. “He’s a good guy,’ she assured us. We are still good friends. He is the best man for president.”

‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.

After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.”

McCain had already met and romanced, while still married to Shepp, the woman who would be his second wife — Cindy Lou Hensley, seventeen years his junior, the only child of a wealthy Anheuser-Busch distributor from Phoenix.

Cindy’s father, Jim Hensley, had been a World War II pilot, shot down over the English Channel. In 1955 he formed his company, Hensley & Co., now the country’s sixth-largest beer distributorship.

Cindy had gone from cheerleader to rodeo queen to graduate student at University of South Carolina by the time she met McCain in 1979. A year later, McCain and his first wife were granted a divorce; six weeks later, McCain married Cindy.

Why McCain didn't reup with first wife

Ted Sampley, who fought with the Army's Special Forces in Vietnam and knows McCain, said: "When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her. ... Eventually, he met Cindy, and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy."

McCain's campaign had no comment on those allegations. But it's apparent he has the support of Carol, who no doubt is indebted to him. In return for giving him a divorce, McCain agreed to pay for his ex-wife's medical care for the rest of her life, according to the Mail.

Cindy McCain Stands Tall as Husband Rejects Infidelity Rumors

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Cindy McCain did not hesitate as she stepped toward the microphone, taking her place in the history of political wives who stood by their men in the face of rumored or alleged marital infidelity.

“Well, obviously, I’m disappointed,” she said, her voice low but clear and self-assured. “More importantly, my children and I not only trust my husband, but know that he would never do anything to not only disappoint our family, but disappoint the people of America. He’s a man of great character.”

“The allegation of infidelity is still a powerful allegation, and it remains powerful because it’s about trust and responsibility, the idea that if you’re cheating on your spouse, what can we expect of you in the presidency,” he said.

Well, The New York Times's article on John McCain's relationship with Vicky Iseman sure did make Mark Salter mad. It's often unclear at times, however, what exactly Salter is trying to say. The Times story is a bit odd and innuendo-y, hinting at a sexual relationship between McCain and Iseman but they clearly don't have the goods. Salter says McCain spoke to New York Times editor Bill Keller and "denied any personal 'romantic' involvement with Iseman, and said that he did not 'betray the public trust.'"

Obviously, I don't know whether or not McCain had sex with Iseman. I suppose by "what the meaning of the word 'is' is" standards, he didn't even deny having had sex with Iseman. Certainly it'd be a bit rich of McCain to get outraged that anyone would even suggest that he might engage in sexual improprieties.

After all, it's well known that he repeatedly cheated on his first wife Carol, of a number of years, with a variety of women, before eventually dumping her for a much-younger heiress whose family fortune was able to help finance his political career.

That's well known, I should say, except to the electorate, who would probably find that this sort of behavior detracts from McCain's "character" appeal.

Meanwhile, there's all this stuff Salter doesn't deny (because, again, it's true) about McCain's questionable ethics. He wrote "letters to government regulators on behalf of the [Iseman's] client," he "often flew on the corporate jets of business executives seeking his support," he resigned as head of a non-profit when "news reports disclosed that the group was tapping the same kinds of unlimited corporate contributions he opposed, including those from companies seeking his favor," his Senate office and his campaign are run by corporate lobbyists, etc.

Meanwhile, there's a storm of speculation surrounding the Iseman story, which continues to be a weird lead for the piece, and we'll have to see what else comes out.

John McCain's temper is well documented. He's called opponents and colleagues "shitheads," "assholes" and in at least one case "a fucking jerk."

But a new book on the presumptive Republican nominee will air perhaps the most shocking angry exchange to date.

The Real McCain by Cliff Schecter, which will arrive in bookstores next month, reports an angry exchange between McCain and his wife that happened in full view of aides and reporters during a 1992 campaign stop. An advance copy of the book was obtained by RAW STORY.

Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness.

In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett.

At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt."

McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

The man who was known as "McNasty" in high school has erupted in foul-languaged tirades at political foes and congressional colleagues more-or-less throughout his career, and his quickness to anger has been an issue on the presidential campaign trail as evidence of his fury has surfaced.

As Schecter notes, McCain's rage is not limited to the political spectrum, and even his family cannot be spared the brute force of his anger.

Schecter, who also blogs at The Agonist, said in an interview the anecdote is "an early example of his uncontrollable temper." In the book he outlines several other examples of McCain losing his cool and raises the question of how that would affect a McCain presidency.

What should voters make of this pattern? In February 2008 Tim Russert succinctly described McCain on MSNBC's Morning Joe. A devilish grin spread from ear to ear as Russert, no McCain hater, leaned forward and spoke in a whisper, "He likes to fight." Russert got it right. But the big question isn't whether McCain likes to fight: it's who, when, and how.

The exchange between McCain and his wife was not reported anywhere when it happened, Schecter said (a LexisNexis database search confirms this).

In 1992, McCain's mention in the national media revolved mostly around his involvement in the Keating Five scandal, and only local reporters closely followed his re-election bid.

McCain is well known for his rapport with the national media covering his presidential bid (he's jokingly referred to the press as "my base"), but Schecter said this incident was buried not out of fealty to the Arizona senator. Rather, it was uneasiness about how to get such a coarse exchange into a family newspaper, and he didn't fault the local press for not covering the incident.

"Members of the media are squeamish covering stuff like this so they let it go," Schecter told RAW STORY in an interview Monday. "Back in '92, when people use naughty words, [reporters] don't know as much what to do with it."

Much has changed since then. President Bush's reference to a New York Times reporter as a "major league asshole" was reported in at least 47 newspapers during the 2000 campaign, when the off-color remark was overheard, according to a database search. And more than a dozen newspapers have reported Dick Cheney's recommendation that Sen. Patrick Leahy "fuck yourself."

McCain and his aides have brushed off suggestions that his temper could impede his ability to perform the sometimes-delicate tasks asked of a president. The candidate was asked about his legendary temper last week on "Fox News Sunday," where he cited his ability to work "across the aisle" while in the Senate.

"You can't scare people or intimidate them if you're going to reach agreement with your colleagues and your contemporaries And I've worked hard at that, and that's what the American people want," McCain said. " The second thing is if I lose my capacity for anger, then I shouldn't be president of the United States. ... When I see the waste and corruption in Washington, I get angry."

McCain's campaign did not return a call from RAW STORY seeking comment Monday morning.

Schecter says McCain's anger is much more than a passion for the issues. One can only imagine what would happen if McCain were to try to squeeze that temper into the tight confines of diplomacy.

"The public certainly has to know what this guy might do as president," Schecter says. Examples like the ones in his book "should worry people, quite frankly."

We must spread awareness about McCain's record now, especially considering a recent Planned Parenthood poll found that half of female voters in 16 battleground states don't know enough about McCain's views on reproductive health. What's more, one in four pro-choice McCain supporters would be less likely to vote for McCain after knowing he opposes Roe v. Wade and backs abstinence-only education.

We're talking about a man who has voted anti-choice 123 out of 128 times. A man who wouldn't require prescription coverage for birth control. A man who voted against allocating $100 million to preventative health services that would have reduced unintended and teen pregnancies. A man who could irreparably damage women's rights in our country unless we get the word out about him now.

But it wasn't until 2000 that McCain, possibly emboldened by Clinton's survival of his scandals, became the first confessed adulterer to have the nerve to run. Now, just a few years after infidelity was considered a deal breaker for a presidential candidate, the party that presents itself as the arbiter of virtue may field an unprecedented two-timing trifecta.

McCain was still married and living with his wife in 1979 while, according to The New York Times' Nicholas Kristof, "aggressively courting a 25-year-old woman who was as beautiful as she was rich." McCain divorced his wife, who had raised their three children while he was imprisoned in Vietnam, then launched his political career with his new wife's family money.

In 2000, McCain managed to deflect media questioning about his first marriage with a deft admission of responsibility for its failure. It's possible that the age of the offense and McCain's charmed relationship with the press will pull him through again, but Giuliani and Gingrich may face a more difficult challenge. Both conducted well-documented affairs in the last decade--while still in public office.

The foremost reason given by supporters of John McCain for why he should be president is that McCain is best qualified to lead the country during this "time of war." Indeed, fighting and winning the Iraq War is the raison d'etre of McCain's presidential campaign. It was the main theme of his campaign announcement speech in April 2007, and it was his most compelling talking point during the Republican presidential debates. Exit polls consistently showed that McCain was the overwhelming favorite among Republican primary voters whose top concern was Iraq.

The question is whether McCain's steadfast support for a war that is deeply unpopular with the American people can propel him into the White House this November?

After five years of fighting, approximately $500 billion in expenditures, and nearly 4,000 dead and 30,000 wounded, McCain advocates an even larger military, economic, and political commitment to Iraq. In sharp contrast with President Bush, who received the loudest bipartisan applause during last month's State of the Union Address when he declared that, due to the success of "the surge," he was planning to bring troops home from Iraq, McCain promises to increase troop levels. See here. And McCain adamantly opposes any timetable for withdrawal. At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire on January 3, 2008, McCain went so far as to declare that it would be "fine with me" if American troops remained in Iraq for "maybe a hundred years."

Unfortunately for McCain, a large majority of the American people -- including significant numbers of Republicans -- strongly disagree with his positions on the war.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll from February 1-3, 2008, reported that 64% of adults nationwide oppose the war in Iraq, while only 34% favor the war -- despite the fact that 52% agree that the U.S. military "is making progress in improving conditions in Iraq and bringing an end to the violence in that country."

A Rasmussen Reports poll from January 29, 2008, reported that 59% of Americans want U.S. troops to be brought home from Iraq immediately or within one year, while only 35% want U.S. troops to remain in Iraq "until the mission is complete." According to this poll, not only do 80% of Democrats favor withdrawal within a year, so do 38% of Republicans.

Similarly, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll from January 18-22, 2008, reported that 63% of registered voters think the United States should withdraw its troops from Iraq right away or within the next year, including 90% of Democrats, 66% of independents, and 32% of Republicans.

It is clear that even with the undeniable success of the surge in reducing sectarian and terrorist violence in Iraq, most Americans -- including large numbers of Republicans -- prefer to end the war (which, at this point, would be better described as a police action or peacekeeping mission) and bring our troops home. Yet, unless McCain changes his publicly stated position on Iraq, a vote for McCain is a vote to continue and even expand the war. Given that the Iraq War is (currently) the second most important issue on the minds of voters, after the economy, this does not bode well for McCain this November.

In my opinion, to improve his chances of winning the general election, McCain should re-think his approach to the Iraq War and reject the Bush Administration's current project of trying to turn Iraq into the leading edge of a movement for "freedom" and "democracy" in the Middle East.

Let us remember why we invaded Iraq in the first place: Because in the aftermath of 9/11, President Bush recognized -- properly so -- that the preeminent national security threat of our time is the risk that Islamic terrorists, who are dedicated to the destruction of the United States and its way of life, will acquire weapons of mass destruction from "rogue" regimes, and use these weapons against us. As President Bush explained at West Point in June 2002, thereal danger "lies in the perilous crossroads of radicalism and technology," specifically, "chemical and biological and nuclear weapons." With such weapons, "even weak states and small groups could attain a catastrophic power to strike great nations." It was the risk posed by the spread of weapons of mass destruction to terrorist groups that provided the principal justification for the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 (whether or not, in hindsight, U.S. and European intelligence regarding Saddam Hussein's WMD program was flawed).

Based on our original national security objectives, the Iraq War was "won" more than four years ago, on December 13, 2003. This was the day that U.S. troops captured Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, famously pulling him from of a "spider hole" near his hometown of Tikrit. By that point in time, the Iraqi military had been routed, Saddam's regime had been deposed, and -- most importantly -- Saddam's ability to develop weapons of mass destruction and to support Islamic terrorism had been eliminated. These objectives were achieved in spectacular fashion in only nine months.

As I previously argued, up to that point in time, the Iraq War remained broadly popular among the American people. In the post-9/11 environment, most Americans recognize that protecting our national security requires taking a more "muscular" approach to confronting and deterring Islamic terrorists and their state sponsors. But Americans, by a wide margin, do not support President Bush's more grandiose vision for "transforming" the Middle East. While the surge has succeeded in reducing the number of U.S. and Iraqi deaths in Iraq -- and in removing the war from newspaper and TV news headlines (for now) -- it has not produced any increase in support for the war among the American people.

While only a minority of Americans want the U.S. to pull out of Iraq "immediately," most Americans are eager for a reasonable plan to end our occupation of Iraq in the foreseeable future. This means in the next year or two, not a decade or more from now. The prospect, which John McCain currently endorses, that significant numbers of U.S. troops will remain in Iraq for years to come, is simply unacceptable to most Americans -- including, I reiterate, large numbers of Republicans, without whose support McCain cannot win in November.

I do not disagree that, compared to Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, John McCain is the best candidate to lead this nation during these times of increasing international conflict, which includes not only the threat of a nuclear Iran, but also unrest in already-nuclear Pakistan, China's rise as a global superpower, and the re-emergence of a hostile Russia. Both Clinton and Obama are woefully unprepared to serve as Commander-in-Chief. I suspect that most Americans would agree with this assessment.

But the Iraq War is so unpopular that it may end up electing the Democrats' candidate this November, despite McCain's inherent foreign policy advantage. To avoid this result, McCain must offer the American people a new strategy for Iraq, something between the Bush Administration's unpopular democratization strategy, with its open-ended commitment to staying in Iraq, and the "cut-and-run" alternative offered by the Democrats.

I predict that if John McCain were to come out with an "Iraqi Peace Plan" that proposed significant reductions in U.S. troops by the end of his first term, he would neutralize the Democrats' ability to use the war as a rallying cry, and all-but-guarantee himself election as the next president of the United States.

Things have changed and I wouldn’t go that far. John cannot help himself but to attempt to resurrect the war as a campaign issue, dragging it kicking and screaming over the economic depression that is setting in. It is all is he comfortable with. This is his one dimension, his one issue, save that he is more experienced. That didn’t work for Hillary and it’s not going to work for the old man war monger.
